Defending the Faith
The Role of The Bishops of The Church
Who are the bishops of the Church, why are they necessary, and what’s their role?
Among the offices of the Church, the chief place is given to the bishops who receive the fullness of the priesthood, and govern the particular churches assigned to them as Christ’s vicars (CCC, 894). By virtue of the authority and sacred power they receive from Christ, the bishops teach and govern by “their counsels, exhortations, and example” (ibid). They sanctify the Church by their “prayer and work,” and “by their ministry of the word and of the sacraments” (CCC, 893).
The bishops of the Church are essential to handing on the Word of God in its full purity to all generations, just as the apostles were 2000 years ago.
Objective: In this course, students will learn about the role of bishops in the Church. Students will learn who bishops are and why they are necessary.
