Objective: Students will learn about sin, how it affects our relationship with God, and how His grace helps us choose what is right.

They will understand:

  • That God created human beings in friendship with Him, but sin entered the world through the disobedience of Adam and Eve, which is called Original Sin.
  • That because of Original Sin, all people are born without sanctifying grace and experience a tendency to sin called concupiscence.
  • That God gives every person free will and a conscience to help them recognize the difference between right and wrong.
  • That our conscience must be formed through prayer, learning God’s laws, and following the teachings of the Church.
  • That some sins are very serious and are called mortal sins, which separate a person from God’s grace when they are committed knowingly and freely.
  • That other sins are called venial sins, which weaken our friendship with God but do not destroy His grace in our souls.
  • That God, in His mercy, gives us the Sacrament of Reconciliation so our sins can be forgiven and His grace restored.
  • That by turning away from sin, listening to our conscience, and receiving God’s grace through the Sacraments, we grow closer to God and live as His faithful children.
