Objective: Students will learn about the Church that Jesus Christ founded and the faith it teaches. They will understand:

  • That the Creed is a summary of the Catholic faith and expresses the truths God has revealed.
  • That the Nicene Creed teaches about God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit, and the Church.
  • That the Church is one, holy, catholic, and apostolic, known as the Four Marks of the Church.
  • That Jesus founded the Church and chose Saint Peter to lead it.
  • That the Church is holy because it was founded by Christ and is guided by the Holy Spirit.
  • That the Church continues Christ's mission by preaching the Gospel, celebrating the sacraments, and leading people to salvation.
  • That the Catholic Church includes many different rites which share the same faith, sacraments, and unity with the pope and the bishops.
  • That the word catholic means universal and that Christ established His Church for all people and all nations.
  • That the Church is apostolic because it was built upon the Apostles chosen by Jesus.
  • That Apostolic Succession has preserved the authority and mission of the Apostles through the bishops of the Church.
  • That the Catholic Church today remains the same Church founded by Jesus Christ.
  • That Sacred Scripture uses symbols such as the Cross, the sheepfold, the vineyard, and the ship to help us understand the Church.
  • That Jesus is the Good Shepherd who lovingly guides and protects His Church.
  • That the Church is the Body of Christ and the family of God, called to lead all people to holiness and eternal life.
  • That every Catholic is called to profess the faith, remain united with the Church, and live as a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ.
