Objective: Students will learn about the Fall of Man and how sin entered the world. They will understand:

  • That God created Adam and Eve in His image and likeness and filled them with sanctifying grace.
  • That Adam and Eve lived in a state of original holiness and justice, in perfect friendship with God.
  • That God gave them freedom so they could know, love, and obey Him.
  • That God gave them a command as a test of their trust and obedience.
  • That Satan tempted Adam and Eve, and they freely chose to disobey God.
  • That this first sin is called Original Sin.
  • That Original Sin broke their friendship with God and brought suffering and death into the world.
  • That Adam and Eve lost sanctifying grace and the special gifts God had given them.
  • That because Adam and Eve are the parents of all humanity, Original Sin is passed on to every human person.
  • That Original Sin means we are born without sanctifying grace and with a fallen human nature.
  • That human beings now experience concupiscence, a tendency to choose sin instead of what is good.
  • That sin causes separation from God and harms our relationship with others.
  • That God did not abandon humanity after the Fall, but promised to send a Savior.
  • That Jesus Christ is the Savior who came to redeem us from sin and restore us to God’s grace.
  • That through Baptism, Original Sin is forgiven and we are given new life in Christ.
  • That suffering entered the world because of sin, but God can bring good even from suffering.
  • That Jesus’ suffering and death on the Cross brought salvation to the world.
  • That God is always faithful, merciful, and calls us back to Him when we sin.
  • That we are called to resist temptation, choose what is good, and live in God’s grace each day.
